How to Measure for Ao Dai: Sizing a Wedding Party

Fitting a Whole Wedding Party — Sizing Six People for Áo Dài

If you're wondering how to measure for áo dài for a whole wedding party, here's the short version: have each person measure themselves at home, write each name next to their numbers, snap a photo of the list, and send it to AMVI on Messenger (m.me/aodaiamvi). We'll reply with which size each person should wear. This works for six people, and it works whether you live in Houston or in Seattle, because AMVI ships across the entire United States.

Start early: wedding áo dài need about 3 months

If your party is wearing áo dài for the wedding, plan to order about 3 months ahead. That gives you room to collect measurements from everyone, sort out sizing questions, and not panic when one bridesmaid is traveling for work and can't measure until next week. Group orders always take longer to organize than you expect, and the waiting is usually on people, not on the fabric.

How to measure for áo dài at home

Each person needs a soft tape measure (the sewing kind, not a metal one) and ideally a second person to help. Wear thin, fitted clothing, and stand naturally. Don't pull the tape tight and don't suck in.

  • Bust: around the fullest part of the chest, tape level across the back.
  • Waist: around the narrowest part of the torso, usually just above the belly button.
  • Hip: around the fullest part of the hips, tape parallel to the floor.
  • Shoulder: from the edge of one shoulder bone to the other, across the back.
  • Sleeve length: from the shoulder edge down to the wrist bone.
  • Dress length: from the top of the shoulder down to where you want the áo dài to end.

Measure twice. If the two numbers differ, send both and tell us. It's much easier to sort out over Messenger than after the order is placed.

Sizing six people: a simple system

Here's the process that keeps a group order from turning into chaos:

  • Make one list. Write each person's name, then their measurements underneath. Use the same order every time (bust, waist, hip, shoulder, sleeve, length).
  • Label the role. Note who is a bridesmaid, groomsman, parent, or the couple. It helps us keep outfits matched.
  • Take a photo of the list. A clear photo of a handwritten page is fine. A typed note works too.
  • Send it on Messenger. We'll go through each person and tell you which size they should wear.

We don't promise a size based on height or weight alone, because two people at the same height can be built very differently. That's why we look at the actual numbers and give advice person by person.

Matching the couple, and the rest of the party

The photo with this post shows a matching couple áo dài with gold beadwork, a popular direction when the bride and groom want to look coordinated without being identical. If you're dressing the couple this way, send their measurements in the same list as everyone else so we can see the whole group together.

AMVI carries ready-made áo dài and also takes custom orders. For a wedding party, some families mix the two: custom for the couple, ready-made sizes for the rest. If a ready-made size doesn't look right from the measurements, we'll tell you honestly and talk through custom options with you.

You can also try the virtual try-on tool on our website to preview how styles look before you decide. It's handy when the group is spread across different cities and can't meet in person.

Ordering from outside Houston: shipping and tax

Our two stores are in Houston, Texas (AMVI Northwest and AMVI Bellaire), but we ship nationwide. Shipping is a flat $10 per order, no matter how many pieces are in it, so ordering for six people costs the same shipping as ordering for one. Sales tax of 8.25% applies only to addresses in Texas; orders shipped outside Texas have no tax.

If everyone's in different states, ask us on Messenger how you'd like to group the orders.

Ready to start?

When you have your list, send it to us at m.me/aodaiamvi, and we'll take it from there. If you'd like to see styles first, browse the collection or try the virtual try-on whenever you have a few quiet minutes.
