Get a soft fabric measuring tape, the kind seamstresses use. If you don't own one, use a string and then hold it against a regular ruler. Wear something thin and fitted, or just your underwear, so the tape touches your actual body. If someone's home, ask them to help.

Stand normally. Don't hold your breath or try to look thinner. The áo dài needs to fit the body you actually have, not the one you're pretending to have for thirty seconds.

The Measurements We Need

For women: We need two numbers. Bust — wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest, keeping it level all the way around your back. Then waist — find the narrowest part of your torso, usually about an inch above your belly button, and wrap the tape around without cinching it tight.

For men: We also need two numbers. Chest — measure around the fullest part of your chest. Then belly — measure around the widest part of your stomach, especially if your belly is bigger than your chest.

Write everything down in inches. If you measured in centimeters, that's fine too — just tell us which unit when you send the numbers.

Three Mistakes People Make When Measuring

First, they measure over a thick sweater and wonder why the dress arrives too big. Second, they try to convert centimeters to inches in their head and get it wrong. Third, they assume their American dress size (like "size 8") means something for áo dài. It doesn't. Vietnamese garment sizing works completely differently, which is why we ignore dress sizes and ask for actual body measurements instead.
