The Groom's Áo Dài — Khăn Đóng, Fit, and Matching the Bride
Share
If you're searching for a men ao dai wedding outfit, here's the short answer: the groom wears an áo dài (a long tunic over matching pants), usually topped with a khăn đóng, the structured turban-style hat. The fit should be close through the shoulders and chest, the tunic should fall below the knee, and the color should be chosen together with the bride's áo dài so the two of you look like a pair in photos. AMVI ships across the entire US, so you don't need to be in Houston to order.
What the groom actually wears
A traditional groom's outfit has three parts:
- The áo dài: a long tunic with a standing collar and side closures. For a wedding or tea ceremony, red and other rich colors with embroidery are a common choice.
- The pants: worn underneath, usually in a coordinating or plain color.
- The khăn đóng: the hat that finishes the look. It is optional for some couples, but many grooms wear it for the tea ceremony and family photos.
One note on wording: we only call something a "bộ" when the listing is a áo + quần set. Check each listing so you know exactly what's included.

Matching the bride without looking like a costume
Matching doesn't mean identical. Here are a few simple ways couples coordinate:
- Same color family: if she wears red, he can wear red with embroidery, like our groom's áo dài with embroidery in red.
- Echo the details: if her áo dài has gold or floral embroidery, pick one for him with similar detailing.
- Think about the whole party: parents, groomsmen, and bridesmaids will be in photos too. Decide the main colors first, then choose around them.
You can also try styles on our virtual try-on tool on the website to get a feel for color and look before you commit.

Getting the fit right for a groom's áo dài
Fit is what separates a nice áo dài from a great one. Because it's a fitted tunic, the shoulders and chest matter most, and a size guess based on your T-shirt size can go wrong. We don't promise a size based on height and weight, because bodies vary. Instead:
- Measure yourself at home (a friend helps, and it's more accurate than doing it alone).
- Send your measurements to us on Messenger: https://m.me/aodaiamvi.
- We'll look them over and recommend the size that suits you.
If you want something made specifically for you, AMVI also takes custom orders (đặt may đo riêng), in addition to ready-made áo dài.
Ordering for the whole group, and timing
Ordering for groomsmen, fathers, or brothers? Write down each person's name and measurements, take a photo of the list, and send it through Messenger. We'll reply with which size each person should wear. It saves you from chasing everyone through a group chat.
For timing, wedding áo dài should be ordered about 3 months ahead. That leaves room for sizing questions and any custom work.
As for cost, shipping is a flat $10 per order, no matter how many pieces you buy. Sales tax of 8.25% applies only to Texas addresses. Orders shipped outside Texas have no tax.
