Vietnamese Engagement Ceremony: What to Wear (Đám Hỏi)

The Đám Hỏi — What the Engagement Party Wears

If you're planning a Vietnamese engagement ceremony (lễ đám hỏi, or lễ ăn hỏi), here's the short answer on clothes: the couple wears coordinated áo dài, the parents and close relatives wear áo dài or formal dress in colors that don't compete with the couple, and the people carrying the trays (the bưng quả team) usually wear matching áo dài in one color. Everyone dresses up, because this is the day two families formally meet.

I run AMVI, and we ship áo dài all over the United States, so many of our customers are planning from California, Virginia, Washington, or anywhere else, not just Houston. Here's how I explain the dress code to families who ask.

What the couple wears at a Vietnamese engagement ceremony

The bride and groom most often wear áo dài that match or clearly coordinate. A popular choice is a matching couple set in the same color family, with the bride's áo dài and the groom's áo dài sharing the same fabric tone or embroidery. Red and gold are traditional colors for the occasion, and gold with beadwork photographs beautifully under indoor lighting and in daylight alike.

Beadwork is worth thinking about early. Detailed beading is the part people notice in photos, so pick where you want it (neckline, chest, sleeves) and keep the groom's details quieter than the bride's so the two don't clash.

What the families wear

A simple way to plan it:

  • Parents of the bride and groom: áo dài in colors that fit the theme but stay a step softer than the couple's. Each side often picks its own color so the two families are easy to tell apart in photos.
  • Siblings and close relatives: áo dài or formal dress in a shared palette.
  • Tray bearers (bưng quả): matching áo dài, usually one color for the whole group. These are often friends and cousins, so sizes vary a lot.

Talk to the other family before anyone buys anything. Agree on two or three colors, and avoid having both mothers show up in the same shade as the bride.

Ordering for a whole group

Group orders are where people get stressed, so we keep the process simple:

  • Write down each person's name and measurements.
  • Take a photo of the list and send it to us on Messenger (m.me/aodaiamvi).
  • We reply with the size each person should wear.

You don't need to bring everyone to a store. Each person measures at home, you collect the numbers, and we go through them together. We don't promise a size based on height or weight, because áo dài fits differently from one body to the next, so we advise each person individually.

Ready-made or custom, and when to order

AMVI offers both ready-made áo dài and custom-made orders. Ready-made works well for relatives and tray bearers. Custom is worth considering for the couple, especially if you want specific beadwork or a precise fit. Wedding áo dài should be ordered about 3 months ahead, and it's smart to give your engagement outfits a similar head start so you aren't rushing. For specific timing on your order, contact us and we'll advise.

If you want to see how a style looks before deciding, you can use our virtual try-on tool on the website.

Shipping and tax

Shipping is a flat $10 per order, whether you buy one áo dài or twelve. Sales tax of 8.25% applies only to addresses in Texas. Outside Texas, there's no tax. That makes ordering for a big group simple to budget.

If you're planning a đám hỏi and want to look at the matching couple áo dài with gold beadwork, or just talk through colors for both families, message us on Messenger with your measurements and your date. We're happy to look things over with you whenever you're ready.
