Vietnamese Bridal Headpiece: Khăn Đóng vs Mấn Guide

The Khăn Đóng and Mấn — Vietnamese Bridal Headpieces Explained

If you're searching for a Vietnamese bridal headpiece, you've probably seen two names: the khăn đóng and the mấn. The khăn đóng is the structured, turban-style headpiece traditionally worn with the áo dài for the tea ceremony (lễ gia tiên). The mấn is a different style of headpiece, and you'll often see the two mentioned together. Below is how we explain the difference to customers, and how to choose one for your wedding day.

What is a khăn đóng?

The khăn đóng is a pre-shaped headpiece, a bit like a small wrapped crown. It sits on top of the head and is worn with an áo dài. Unlike a scarf you wrap yourself, it is already formed, so you place it on your head instead of wrapping it fresh on the day.

The red one pictured with this post is the style many brides choose for the ceremony, since red is the color most often associated with Vietnamese weddings. It pairs naturally with a red or gold áo dài.

Khăn đóng vs. mấn: how to tell them apart

  • Khăn đóng: a structured headpiece worn on top of the head, usually matched to the color of the áo dài.
  • Mấn: a separate headpiece style with its own look and its own way of being worn. If you aren't sure which one fits what you picture, send us a photo and we'll help you identify it.

A lot of second-generation brides come to us with a photo of their mom's or grandma's wedding and ask, "What was she wearing on her head?" That's a great place to start. Send the photo and we can help you figure out which style it is.

Choosing a headpiece that goes with your áo dài

Think about the headpiece and the áo dài as one outfit, not two separate purchases. A few things to check:

  • Color: match or complement the áo dài. A red khăn đóng looks best with an áo dài in red, gold, or a coordinating tone.
  • Embroidery and detail: if your áo dài has a lot of detail, a simpler headpiece keeps the look balanced, and the other way around.
  • Hair: think about whether you'll wear your hair up or down, and bring that up when you ask us about fit.
  • Photos: you'll wear it for the ceremony and family portraits, so try it with your outfit before the day.

You can use the virtual try-on tool on our website to see how an áo dài looks on you before you decide, which helps when you're picking colors to go with the headpiece.
